Many Gemmologists believe the cut is one of the most important factors in a diamonds characteristic, even if the stone has perfect colour and clarity it will not release the fire and sparkle potential of the stone. The width and depth of the cut can also affect this; too shallow and the light will be lost out the bottom, too deep and it escapes out the sides. It has taken years of mathematical and empirical analysis to perfect the modern cuts available today.

Too Shallow: Light is lost out of the bottom causing the diamond to lose brilliance. |

Too Deep: Light escapes out of the sides causing the diamond to appear dark and dull. | |

Polish & Symmetry

Polish and symmetry are also a very important part of the cutting process, they represent the way a diamond is finished off, polish determines how smooth the surface of the facets are and symmetry how even or symmetrical the facets are. This is like fine tuning the diamond and will effect how the light is directed as it enters and exits the diamond. The better the polish and symmetry the more lustre and brilliant the diamond.
